Douglas Carl Engelbart (January 30, 1925- Current)[]

====Douglas Engelbart was born in the state of Oregon in 1925. He was one of three children, an older sister and a younger brother. In 1942, Engelbart graduated from high school and began his studies at Oregon State University. Unfortunately his studies were interrupted by the draft. Engelbart served the US Navy for two years as a radar technician. After serving in the draft Engelbart returned to Oregon State University and completed his Bachelors degree in electrical engineering and went on to work at NACA Ames Laboratory. After getting engaged in 1951, Engelbart began to think about think about his role in the future. He wanted to spend his lifework on something that would impact the world. At this point in his life Engelbart had read a fair bit about the development of the computer. He saw the computer to have potential in its ability to assist people in organizing their ideas efficiently and communicating flexibly. With this in mind, Engelbart applied to University of California, Berkeley. By 1955 Engelbart had obtained his Ph.D. With his Ph.D, Englebart went on to work at Standford Research Institute for twenty years. For eleven years, he was a senior scientist at both Tymshare and Mcdonnell Douglas Corporation. By 1963, he was able to start his own research lab, which was named the Augmention Research Center. There he developed a hyper-media groupware system called NLS (which was later renamed AUGMENT). Engelbart has changed the face of technology through his development of NLS. NLS is used to employ the use of hypertext links, the mouse, raster-scan video monitors, information organized by relevance,Screen windowing, presentation programs, as well as other computer concepts.Today, Douglas Engelbart continues to research and develop.
